Who receives the profits?
Up until 2008 Farleigh Hospice was the lottery’s sole beneficiary and as such received all of the profits raised.
On forming the relationship with East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) in 2008, and becoming ‘Local Hospice Lottery’, it became essential that players could also be identified by which hospice benefitted from the profits raised by their individual membership. For this reason, when a new member joins the Local Hospice Lottery, they are asked which hospice they would like to support and to receive the profits raised by every £1 they spend.
How much does the Local Hospice Lottery contribute to the funding of hospice services?
Although the main aim of Local Hospice Lottery will always be to raise as much money as possible for the hospices involved, weekly overheads and running costs must also always be recognised and considered. One of the main benefits of developing a lottery in partnership, rather than stand alone, is that there remains only one weekly prize fund and one set of running costs.
Prior to the launch of the new partnership Farleigh Hospice received a total of around £1.7 million from the Farleigh Hospice Lottery to help fund the care of the mid Essex community. In fact, the lottery is such a significant and regular contributor towards funding the services provided by Farleigh Hospice that its contributions are now responsible for funding the care for 1 in 9 of all Farleigh Hospice patients. That’s quite a contribution!
From April 2008 East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices' (EACH) supporters have joined the weekly draw and therefore now also benefit from the profits it raises. It is hoped that within the first 5 years of the partnership over £300,000 will be raised by the Local Hospice Lottery to help the funding of EACH and the care of life-limited and life-threatened children in the East Anglian area.
In July 2009 St Luke's Hospice supporters from Basildon and Thurrock have the opportunity to join the Local Hospice Lottery to support their local hospice, with the hope that membership will grow in a similar way to the other hospice's benefitting from the regular and sustainable form of income that the Local Hospice Lottery provides.
The Local Hospice Lottery will be responsible for administering the weekly game and for covering the £2,000 weekly prize fund. After these costs have been met and the appropriate amount has been credited to EACH and St Luke's Hospice, the balance will be transferred from the Local Hospice Lottery to Farleigh Hospice to help fund the care and support provided by the hospice to people affected by life-limiting illness in mid Essex.
