Helen & Douglas House

Helen & Douglas House is a home from home for local terminally children and their families. They provide round-the-clock care in a warm, loving environment. It’s a comforting place where families can enjoy creating happy memories together in their child’s last days, weeks, months or years. Helen & Douglas House is there to support the whole family at an unimaginably difficult time, providing practical and emotional support as families face the challenges of terminal illness.

Based in Oxford, but supporting families from surrounding counties and as far as London, Helen & Douglas House cares for terminally ill children at the hospice and through their outreach service. At Helen House, the world’s first children’s hospice, they care for babies and children up to the age of 18.

Parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents are all part of the Helen & Douglas House family. At the toughest time of their lives, they give families the time and space to enjoy the precious moments they have left with each other. In the midst of exhaustion and grief, Helen & Douglas House help them cope with their child’s final days.

How playing the Local Hospice Lottery helps Helen & Douglas House

It costs over £3 million a year to run the hospice, and Helen & Douglas House is dependent on voluntary contributions for over 85% of this. This means that they rely almost entirely on the generosity of people on the local community to be able to provide sustainable, specialist care for the young people who visit us and support for their families.

Profits from the Local Hospice Lottery help towards the running costs of Helen & Douglas House, and provide a regular stream of income which they can rely on receiving every month. Not only does this help to provide essential care and support to families right now, it also enables Helen & Douglas House to plan and develop their services for the future.

In 2023, £13,644,000 was raised from tickets purchased by players supporting all participating hospices, with 2% spent on prizes, 12% spent on administration and management and 19% reinvested to recruit new lottery players. The remaining 67% was given to hospice care – an amazing total of £9,163,000.

Local Hospice Lottery will give between 60% and 80% of profits from individuals playing in support of Helen & Douglas House to Helen & Douglas House. This is expected to be at least £1,400,000 over five years from April 2024.
