On 30th September, Derek received a call to say he had won £10,000 playing the Local Hospice Lottery in support of The Prince of Wales Hospice.
A stunned Derek said, “I could not believe it when the Hospice called. I was absolutely gobsmacked that I’d won anything, let alone £10,000!”
Derek visited the Hospice to collect his cheque and told the staff that he decided to switch from The Postcode Lottery to the Local Hospice Lottery as he wanted his £1 plays to benefit his local community. Derek had had no previous connection to the Hospice; however, he likes to know he is helping local people. As a result he kindly donated some of his winnings to the Hospice while spending the rest on house renovations!
Since The Prince of Wales Hospice joined the Local Hospice Lottery in 2013, players like Derek have helped to raise over £1.4 million so far! Every year, the Hospice cares for nearly 1,000 people, so those £1 plays have gone a long way in caring for the local community!
