Farleigh Hospice
Farleigh Hospice is a Registered Charity (no. 284670).
Originally named the Chelmsford Hospice Service, Farleigh Hospice was formed in 1982 following the death of local community member Audrey Appleton. Since establishment in 1982 the charity has adapted and grown to meet the needs and requirements of the Mid Essex community. From simply offering a sitting service, using volunteers and just two specialist care nurses, in 2006 Farleigh Hospice moved to a new, purpose built building in North Court Road, Chelmsford, and has pioneered new services such as an Independent Living Team and a Hospice Outreach Project (the HOP). Farleigh Hospice's Hospice Outreach Project makes them the first and only hospice in the UK able to offer a mobile hospice service to its patients.
Working with a range of people affected by a variety of life limiting illnesses, not just cancer, Farleigh Hospice’s mission is easily summarised; ‘to enable individuals to live their lives as fully as possible’. It is a common misconception that hospices are sad places which are simply for dying. Patients are frequently surprised to find that it is actually a place of great joy and happiness.
In patients' homes, in the day hospices at Maldon and Chelmsford, and in the Inpatient Unit, Farleigh Hospice’s specialist team of health care professionals provide a range of services tailored to meet the individual needs of patients and their families. Whether a patient requires relief from pain, help to live positively, expert advice, specialist care in a comforting environment, support for their children and family, or a whole host of other services, Farleigh Hospice is there for them at their time of greatest need.
Each and every week, Farleigh Hospice provides vital support, totally free of charge, to around 250 local people affected by cancer and other life limiting illnesses. To fund this care the charity relies on the generosity of the mid Essex community. As the number of patients treated by Farleigh Hospice each year continues to steadily grow, so does the cost of providing these specialist services. During the year 2009-2010 Farleigh Hospice's expenditure was £3.7 million. With only part of this cost being covered by the NHS, this means that FarleighHospice needs to raise £7,750 every single day to enable Farleigh Hospice to continue providing its vital care and support. , Farleigh Hospice relies on donations, fundraising, Legacies (or gifts left in Will's) and income generated from its shops and the Local Hospice Lottery to raise this amount.
