St Joseph's Hospice in your community
St Joseph’s Hospice has been at the heart of East London since 1905, providing care to the local community, helping local people affected by life-limiting and terminal illness.
Being diagnosed with a terminal illness can be devastating, turning your world upside down, affecting you and those around you. What becomes important is the time you have left. St Joseph’s Hospice provides the very best end of life and respite care to patients and provides care and support to families to cope with terminal illness and bereavement.
Each year, the hospice supports more than 6,000 local people and have support available 24 hours a day, 365 days a week.
Despite St Joseph’s receiving some statutory funding from the NHS, they still need to raise around £19,000 every day to be able to provide their services. Profits from the Local Hospice Lottery help towards St Joseph’s Hospice’s running costs and provides a regular stream of income which they can rely on receiving, each and every month. Not only does this help to provide essential care and support to local families right now, it also enables the Hospice to plan and develop their services for the future.
In 2020 for each £1 entry in the weekly draw Local Hospice Lottery gave an average of 68p to hospice care. St Joseph’s Hospice is one of a number of hospices throughout Great Britain supported by Local Hospice Lottery. Local Hospice Lottery will give between 55% and 80% of profits from individuals playing in support of St Joseph’s Hospice to St Joseph’s Hospice.
With the help of wonderful supporters like you, this is expected to be at least £400,000 over five years (from April 2020)!

Information about prizes, the way in which they are selected and the likelihood of winning a prize, is available now via 'Prizes and odds of winning'. Further information about the distribution of proceeds is also available via 'What your support means'. All of these details are also included in the Welcome Pack that will posted to you within 5 working days of joining.
In 2020, £9.17 million was raised from ticket sales, with 3% spent on prizes, 12% spent on administration and management and 17% reinvested to recruit new lottery members. The remaining 68% was given to hospice care – an amazing total of £6.28 million. Based on estimated draw-entry numbers, the likelihood of winning a prize in the weekly draw is, on average, 1 in 960. Similarly, for our March & September Super Draws the likelihood of winning a prize is estimated at 1 in 1,175 and for our Christmas Super Draw is 1 in 4,335.
How winners are determined and prizes allocated
On joining you will be allocated a unique game number(s). Winning game numbers are selected from the unique game numbers of all players entering the draw by using licensed Random Number Generator (RNG) software. The player with the first game number randomly selected wins the £2,000 prize (or the £10,000 prize if a Super Draw). All other prizes are then allocated in the same sequence as the game numbers are drawn. As part of this process, the £1,000 prize in the regular weekly draw will either be won or rolled over to a maximum of £25,000.
How the Lottery works
Once you have completed the online form, you will be allocated a unique game number(s) and this will be confirmed in your Welcome Pack which will be posted to you within 5 working days of joining. Your Welcome Pack will also include lots of other useful information about how the Lottery works and how your ongoing participation will directly benefit your local hospice and the local families that rely on its services.
A member of our Customer Experience Team will also try and make contact with you, just to check that you have received your Welcome Pack and are happy with everything.
Then as soon as we receive your first payment – you’ll enter the draw and have a chance to win as you help!
The draw takes place every Monday (except for bank holidays, where the draw will then take place on the next working day) and winners’ cheques are sent out automatically. So you don’t even need to worry about checking your number(s) or claiming your prizes!

How much it costs to play
One game number in Local Hospice Lottery’s weekly draw costs just £5 per month and this gives you the best chance of entering every weekly draw, regardless of how many Mondays (and therefore draws) there are in the month. PLUS… the full payment of £60 across the course of a year also gives you up to EIGHT EXTRA entries (per game number) in our annual £10,000 Christmas Super Draws. Increasing your chance to win AND help!
Players can of course further increase their odds of winning (and helping!) by buying more than one game number if they wish and anyone living in Great Britain, providing they are aged 18 or over, can play.
Direct Debit is our preferred method of payment as it helps to keep administration costs to a minimum and ensures that players don’t miss a draw. You can chose to spread your cost and pay monthly (just £5.00 per month, per game number), or quarterly (£15 per game number), half-yearly (£30 per game number) or annually (£60 per game number) if you prefer.
We understand that not everyone will want to pay by direct debit, and for this reason you can also choose to pay by debit card should you prefer (please note – min of £30, debit cards only).
