Highland Hospice provides specialist end-of-life care to people with progressive and life-limiting illnesses across the Highlands, as well as offering support for their relatives and carers. Highland Hospice offers a haven for rest and recuperation - providing a space where families can enjoy special moments and create precious memories together.
The services at Highland Hospice are completely without charge, meaning they’re available to anyone who needs to use them. Nobody should be left without care at the end of their life. This is only made possible by the ongoing support and kindness from the local community.
Local Hospice Lottery is a not-for-profit weekly lottery that helps provide hospices across Great Britain with a regular and sustainable income. In 2020 for each £1 entry in the weekly draw Local Hospice Lottery gave an average of 68p to hospice care – that’s substantially higher than other good cause lotteries, such as The National Lottery or The Health Lottery. Since 1997 Local Hospice Lottery has contributed in excess of £39 million to hospice care. You can play the Local Hospice Lottery in support of Highland Hospice.
How Proceeds are Spent and Odds of Winning
In 2020, £9.17 million was raised from ticket sales, with 3% spent on prizes, 12% spent on administration and management and 17% reinvested to recruit new lottery members. The remaining 68% was given to hospice care – an amazing total of £6.28 million. Based on estimated draw-entry numbers, the likelihood of winning a prize in the weekly draw is, on average, 1 in 960. Similarly, for our March & September Super Draws the likelihood of winning a prize is estimated at 1 in 1,175 and for our Xmas Super Draw is 1 in 4,335.
How winners are determined and prizes allocated
On joining you will be allocated a unique game number(s). Winning game numbers are selected from the unique game numbers of all players entering the draw by using licensed Random Number Generator (RNG) software. The player with the first game number randomly selected wins the £2,000 prize (or the £10,000 prize if a Super Draw). All other prizes are then allocated in the same sequence as the game numbers are drawn. As part of this process, the £1,000 prize in the regular weekly draw will either be won or rolled over to a maximum of £25,000.
Highland Hospice has become a charity close to the hearts of Daniel McWilliams, from Moy Estate, Tomatin, and his mum Anne. In 2015 Daniel’s father Danny was cared for by the Hospice before he sadly passed away at the age of 56.
Daniel said, “Mum had just completed her treatment for breast cancer in 2012 when, two days later, we got the news that Dad was diagnosed with throat cancer. After a series of operations and chemotherapy he was given the all clear in 2013 but then in August 2014 we got the news that the cancer was back. He went downhill quite rapidly after that and was moved to the Hospice in October where he passed away in March of the next year.”
“During the months we spent coming to the Hospice to visit Dad, we really appreciated the first class care that he received from absolutely everyone – the nurses, cooks, doctors, housekeepers….just all the staff he was in contact with. They really did all they could to make a difficult situation as good as it possibly could be.”
“What struck me especially was that it was not just Dad that they helped, it was all of us too – me, Mum and my brothers and sisters. This was a hard time for us all, and we always felt that the staff genuinely cared about how we were.”
“We are a very close family – and we have helped each other to cope since Dad passed away. What has really helped me is focusing on giving something back to the Hospice. I competed in their dance competition Strictly Inverness in 2016 – performing in front of over 1,000 people in total – and I made it to the final. Since then I have done a bungee jump and signed up for a 10K – again to raise funds for the Hospice.”

When faced with life shortening illness, death and bereavement, the people of the Highlands deserve the best possible care and support. At Highland Hospice their ambition is to ensure they receive this.
Their Inpatient Unit and Day Therapy Centres offer specialist support to patients with a progressive, life shortening illness. By managing their pain and other physical symptoms, Highland Hospice help make time and space for reflection, for gaining perspective and for achieving a measure of calm and tranquillity. Crucially, their team also offers advice with the emotional, social and spiritual issues that may arise and work with patients, families and carers at a time of transition to help them enjoy, value and commemorate life.
As well as providing services direct to those in need, Highland Hospice want to serve care professionals and informal carers in the Highland community by sharing knowledge and resources so they can provide the best care they can.
Through their adult and child bereavement services and by working in partnership with others Highland Hospice aim to ensure support is available for all those in the Highlands living with grief, regardless of age or location.
By offering support, mentoring and learning their specialist staff are able to deliver and share our skills in local hospitals and care homes, and in people’s homes, helping people to be provided with respect, dignity and choice during their declining health.
To extend the work and reach of Highland Hospice, they want to work in partnership to enable communities to come together to harness their compassion to support each other at the end of life.
Volunteers and those of partner organisations offer befriending services providing practical support to those living at home, helping to reduce social isolation and offering carers a break.
Highland Hospice work with key individuals and groups, and engage with them and other stakeholders, working together to design community-led solutions to deliver and support health and social care services that meet the specific needs of that community.
Highland Hospice is committed to the principles of equality and diversity and their services are offered free of charge to all those in the Highlands who need them. They are an independent local charity reliant on the community and any contribution of time or money, as a volunteer or donor, can make a meaningful difference to people when they need it most.
Local Hospice Lottery is a not-for-profit, hospice-owned collaboration. Highland Hospice is one of 28 hospices throughout Great Britain supported by Local Hospice Lottery. For every £1 spent to enter the weekly draw, Local Hospice Lottery gives an average of 68p to hospice care. Through sharing one prize fund and one set of administration costs – lots of expenditure can be saved and Highland Hospice will receive more from every £1 you spend than they would if they ran their own lottery. You get to choose which hospice you play for. This means the proceeds from entry will directly benefit Highland Hospice and families across the Highlands.
Local Hospice Lottery will give between 55% and 80% of profits from individuals playing in support of Highland Hospice to Highland Hospice. This is expected to be at least £1,200,000 over five years from April 2020.
And as Local Hospice Lottery has the largest prize fund of any hospice lottery – which you’ll have a chance to win in – everyone’s a winner!
Once you have completed the online form, you will be allocated a unique game number(s) and this will be confirmed in your Welcome Pack which will be posted to you within 5 working days of joining. Your Welcome Pack will also include lots of other useful information about how the Lottery works and how your ongoing participation will directly benefit your local hospice and the local families that rely on its services.
A member of our Customer Experience Team will also try and make contact with you, just to check that you have received your Welcome Pack and are happy with everything.
Then as soon as we receive your first payment – you’ll enter the draw and have a chance to win as you help!
The draw takes place every Monday (except for bank holidays, where the draw will then take place on the next working day) and winners’ cheques are sent out automatically. So you don’t even need to worry about checking your number(s) or claiming your prizes!

One game number in Local Hospice Lottery’s weekly draw costs just £5 per month and this gives you the best chance of entering every weekly draw, regardless of how many Mondays (and therefore draws) there are in the month. PLUS… the full payment of £60 across the course of a year also gives you up to EIGHT EXTRA entries (per game number) in our annual £10,000 Christmas Super Draws. Increasing your chance to win AND help!
Players can of course further increase their odds of winning (and helping!) by buying more than one game number if they wish and anyone living in Great Britain, providing they are aged 18 or over, can play.
Direct Debit is our preferred method of payment as it helps to keep administration costs to a minimum and ensures that players don’t miss a draw. You can chose to spread your cost and pay monthly (just £5.00 per month, per game number), or quarterly (£15 per game number), half-yearly (£30 per game number) or annually (£60 per game number) if you prefer.
We understand that not everyone will want to pay by direct debit, and for this reason you can also choose to pay by debit card should you prefer (please note – min of £30, debit cards only).
